Remember this in 2011?

As far as I can tell, he hasn't scored a first-team goal for any club since.

Contender for one of the most overrated players we've ever had.

Seen him play a dozen times, and every single time he's looked nothing more than average.

No idea how he keeps getting called up for Wales.

He's still only 21. He did his anterior cruciate with us about 3 years ago. I always maintain that some of these lower limb injuries impact on these players' careers longterm more than we realise. They get back to professional football, but their seemingly perfect recoveries mask tiny post-injury deficits that have disproportionately significant impacts on their performance levels & ability to achieve to the same level. Who knows, he might have been flying much higher by now had it not been for the ACL. I was concerned that Wootton might not turn out in top form this season after his injury, but thankfully it seems he's ok.

Completely agree. You only have to take 2 or 3 % off a player's acceleration and pace and they're all of a sudden a completely different player. Especially in attacking players who rely on that aspect of their game. In this day and age the chances of making a full recovery are greater, but as you say, there's so many examples where it's not the case.

In respect of Wootton, he may well have lost that same 2 or 3% but as centre half you're not going to notice it quite as much as a winger/striker who can't glide past him man with ease the way he used to.

Feel sorry for the lad. Talented as fuck but injury has affected him.
